No Heat? Try These Quick Fixes Before You Call

When your heat stops working on a cold day, don’t panic. Before you schedule a service call to your South Shore home, there are a few common issues you can check on your own, and many of them have simple fixes. Keep reading this blog from Albert Culver to walk through our no-heat checklist and learn what to do if your system still isn’t running.

What to Do If Your Home Loses Heat

1. Check Your Thermostat Settings and Batteries

Make sure your thermostat is set to “heat” or “auto” and that the temperature is set a few degrees above the current temperature in your home. If the screen is blank or dim, the batteries may be dead. Swap in fresh ones and give your system a few minutes to respond.

2. Make Sure Breakers and Emergency Switches Are On

Head to your electrical panel and look for any tripped breakers. If you find one, flip it back on. Your heating system also has a red emergency switch, usually found at the top of the basement stairs or near the unit itself. It could be mistaken for a light switch, so make sure it’s in the “on” position.

3. Look at Your Fuel Tank Gauge

An empty tank is one of the most common reasons for a no-heat call. Take a look at your tank gauge; if it’s low or empty, give us a call for a delivery. Keep in mind that after a runout, your system may need to be primed by a technician before it can start again.

4. Check Your Air Filter

If you have a furnace, a clogged air filter can restrict airflow and cause your system to shut down for safety. Pull out the filter and take a look. If it’s covered in dust and debris, replace it with a clean one.

5. Make Sure Vents and Radiators Aren’t Blocked

Furniture, rugs, and curtains can easily cover vents or radiators without you noticing. If only certain rooms feel cold, check that nothing is blocking the heat from getting where it needs to go.

6. Press the Reset Button One Time Only

Your burner should have a red reset button. Press it ONCE and wait to see if the system starts. If nothing happens, don’t press it again. Pressing it more than once can cause oil to build up in the burner and create a safety hazard.
